ONLINE CONSULTATION

What can be discussed online

Rashes and itching have many causes. Clear photographs and information about onset, spread, medicines, and accompanying symptoms are helpful.

  • Localized rash, itching, or mild redness
  • Symptoms without breathing difficulty or high fever
  • Review using clear photographs

The doctor may recommend an in-person visit or tests when online assessment is not sufficient.

POSSIBLE CONDITIONS

Symptoms and possible conditions

Possible causes include eczema, contact dermatitis, urticaria, fungal infection, shingles, and drug eruption. Severe allergy or serious drug reactions may require emergency care.

WHEN TO SEEK CARE IN PERSON

Seek prompt in-person care if any of these apply

These symptoms may indicate a severe allergic reaction or infection. Do not wait for an online consultation if any of the following apply.

Breathing difficulty or swelling of the lips or tongue
Blisters or skin peeling over a wide area
Purple spots that do not fade when pressed
Severe pain, high fever, or rapid spread

We may recommend an early in-person visit

  • Symptoms also affect the eyes, mouth, or other mucous membranes
  • Redness, swelling, or heat is spreading rapidly
  • Pus or severe pain
  • A rash that began after starting a new medicine

If you have difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or tongue, or impaired consciousness, consider calling 119.

TESTS AND TREATMENT

Tests and treatment

We will assess the skin using clear images

You may be asked to show the affected area in good light. If necessary, we will recommend a dermatologist and appropriate tests.

Treatment depends on the appearance and cause

The doctor will decide whether a moisturizer, antihistamine, or topical medicine is appropriate. An in-person visit is required if infection is suspected.

Combining over-the-counter steroids or antibiotics can make the condition harder to assess. Tell us which medicines you have used.
