  • Review of symptoms and current treatment

The doctor may recommend an in-person visit or tests when online assessment is not sufficient.

POSSIBLE CONDITIONS

Symptoms and possible conditions

Possible causes include muscle strain, osteoarthritis, tendinitis, gout, and inflammatory arthritis. Septic arthritis, fracture, or thrombosis requires prompt in-person assessment.

WHEN TO SEEK CARE IN PERSON

Seek prompt in-person care if any of these apply

These symptoms may indicate a fracture, infection, or nerve damage. If any of the following apply, prioritize in-person care.

We may recommend an early in-person visit

  • Pain is severe enough that you cannot bear weight
  • Marked swelling or rapidly worsening symptoms
  • Severe pain at night or unexplained weight loss

TESTS AND TREATMENT

Tests and treatment

Imaging or an in-person examination may be needed
