ONLINE CONSULTATION

What can be discussed online

Most headaches are primary headaches such as migraine or tension-type headache, but a sudden or unusual headache needs urgent assessment.

  • A headache similar to previous episodes
  • Migraine symptoms without new neurological signs
  • Review of current medication and self-care

The doctor may recommend an in-person visit or tests when online assessment is not sufficient.

POSSIBLE CONDITIONS

Symptoms and possible conditions

Possible causes include migraine, tension-type headache, viral illness, sinusitis, and medication overuse. Dangerous causes include stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage, meningitis, and acute glaucoma.

WHEN TO SEEK CARE IN PERSON

Seek prompt in-person care if any of these apply

These symptoms may indicate a stroke, meningitis, or another serious condition. Do not wait for an online consultation if any of the following apply.

Fever with a stiff neck
Headache after a significant head injury

We may recommend an early in-person visit

  • A new severe headache during pregnancy or after delivery
  • Reduced vision or severe eye pain
  • A first headache beginning after age 50
  • A clear change in the frequency or nature of your headaches

If you have a sudden severe headache, weakness, speech difficulty, or impaired consciousness, consider calling 119.

TESTS AND TREATMENT

Tests and treatment

Imaging or other tests may be needed

If a dangerous cause is suspected or the headache differs from your usual pattern, you will need to visit a facility that can perform CT, MRI, or other appropriate tests.

Treatment depends on the type of headache

Based on the clinical course, the doctor will consider migraine, tension-type headache, and other causes, then decide whether a pain reliever or migraine medicine is appropriate.

Frequent use of pain relievers can make headaches worse. Tell the doctor how many days you take them.
